Female Genital Cutting in Africa : Legal and non-legal strategies to abandon the pratice

The issue of female genital cutting challenges our understanding of the body and self, sexuality, family and morality, demonstrating the tension between cultural differences and the relations between women and tradition in Africa. It is interesting tu see how female genitale cutting has been reconceived as a violation of women's rights, rather than simply an accepted traditional pratice, and how this has been accompanied by an international, regional and national willingness to discourage the practice. Legal strategie currently in place have been insufficient and have produced a backlash from praticing local populations. As such it is clear that these laws must be preceded, or at least accompanied, by grassroots strategies that empower communities and provide them the necessary information and tools for independent decision-making. Comprehensive, education-based empowerment is the most promising strategy in establishing the necessary conditions for communities themselves to abandon the pratice.
